How to Perform a Website Checkup

A ten question checklist to help you evaluate your website’s overall health.

At least every six months it is important to give your website a thorough review.  Try looking at it from the perspective of a new user and future customer.  Use the following as guidelines to help you as you search through the pages of your website.  Take notes as you look so you can be sure to address any issues you come across.  Here are a few things you should pay particular attention to as you examine your site. How to Perform a Website Checkup

1.    Is your website mobile friendly?  You probably already know that Google includes mobile friendliness in its mobile search algorithm as a ranking factor, but did you know Google recently increased the importance of mobile friendliness in the ranking?  If you haven’t gotten around to getting a responsive design yet, your website could be falling down in the rankings.

2.    Is your site content up-to-date?  Look at your team bios, company news, and products and services sections. Are these areas still accurate and current?  Make sure your site users are seeing recent and relevant information when they visit your website.

3.    Is your website design still fresh? As with all design trends, website designs are constantly changing and evolving. It’s important to look at them with a critical eye at least every year to be sure your customers are still getting something appealing. Also, be sure that the design looks great on mobile. What looks good on the desktop doesn’t always transfer to mobile well without a responsive design.  Check your competitors often.  Do they offer something your website is lacking?

4.    Are you using Google Analytics? If you haven’t set up your analytics yet, you will want to get that going.  You will be able to get insights on how your website is performing and discover where issues may lie.  Take the time to set it up correctly to get the most accurate data possible.

5.    Are you using Schema Markup?  Schema markup is an aspect of search engine optimization that pulls information in data groups so the correct and most helpful information is relayed to the user.  This is created in the back-end code of your website and can affect website ranking.

6.    Do you have any broken links?  Use Screaming Frog or another tool to help identify broken links and crawl errors. These issues frustrate users and potential clients.

7.    Do you have your social media accounts linked to your website, and are they working?  If you have active social media channels, be sure to include the links on your homepage.  Check regularly to be sure these links are still working, and update your social media often to attract more traffic to your business.

8.    Do you have eye-catching and relevant images?  It’s good to update the images on your website fairly often. This simple update can freshen up a tired looking website with very little effort.  Remember to use alt attributes to enhance usability.

9.    Does your website have a fast load time?  This is important for desktop, but especially for mobile, as a mobile device will have limited hardware support.  Most users will not wait patiently for a website to load. They would rather check out a competitor.

10.    Does your website have clear calls to action?  Make sure your calls-to-action are clean and prominent. Buttons should be easy to spot and click on especially on a mobile device.
